This Andreas Cellarius Copernican System art print, is a giclee reproduction and features his Copernican System (Plate 5 of 29) of the universe, first published in 1660 in his star atlas, Harmonia Macrocosmica. We will be adding the other plates of these magnificent prints, so be sure to check back often.

It was the first space race — did the sun orbit the earth or did the earth orbit the sun? In the 1600’s it was up for grabs. The greatest minds in science and religion waged a war of observation and ideology to try and answer the question: what is our true place in the universe?

In this turbulent environment worked Andreas Cellarius, a cartographer and the president of a latin school in Hoorn, in North Holland. We don’t know much about Cellarius — his birth, his death, and that he was interested in the mathematics of fortified walls and liked to write poetry about his fellow teachers.

But in 1660, Andreas Cellarius published a truly unique document. Cellarius worked with the engraver and portraitist Frederick Hendrick Van Hove, and the cartographer Johannes van Loon to compile the known history of astronomical systems into a single star atlas. Every competing theory and philosophy of the cosmos in a single, beautiful volume. He called it the Harmonia Macrocosmica.

The Harmonia Macrocosmica covered 1500 years of astronomical theory. It begins with Ptolemy’s Almagest star catalog from 150 A.D., the oldest surviving comprehensive document of celestial motion.

The Macrocosmica then describes the renaissance theories of Nicolaus Copernicus, who’s 1543 book On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres made the dramatic statement that the earth orbited the sun, and became a cornerstone of the scientific revolution. The Macrocosmica continues to catalog Tyco Brahe’s planisphere — a “geo-heliocentric" system where the Sun and Moon orbit the Earth, and the other planets orbit the Sun.

The final pages of the Macrocosmica leave science behind in a series of colorful and imaginative depictions of the constellations — Greek, Roman and the later Christian icons. It’s a sweeping and stunningly beautiful work, criticized in it’s time for refusing to take a side in the debate of sun vs earth, science vs religion. But to criticize the Macrocosmica is to misunderstand its purpose — it wasn’t telling us how the universe works, it was showing how we see ourselves in it.

While these prints are from yesteryear, we've remastered them with the touch ups necessary to restore them to their original glory as much as possible without losing the vintage nature of the artwork. We will be adding all twenty nine of these stunning celestial maps, so be sure to check back often.

ABOUT ANDREAS CELLARIUS:
Andreas Cellarius (c. 1596, Neuhausen, – 1665, Hoorn) was a Dutch-German cartographer, best known for his Harmonia Macrocosmica of 1660, a major star atlas, published by Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam. Andreas Cellarius, illustration of the Copernican system, from the Harmonia Macrocosmica (1660).

He was born in Neuhausen (now a part of Worms), and was educated in Heidelberg. The Protestant Cellarius may have left Heidelberg at the onset of the Thirty Years' War in 1618 or in 1622 when the city came in Catholic hands. His activities are unclear at this time but based on his later works it is conjectured he spent time in Poland and may have even worked as a military engineer there.

In 1625 he married Catharina Elt(e)mans in Amsterdam, where he worked as school master of a Latin School. After a brief stay in The Hague, the family moved to Hoorn. From 1637 until his death he was rector of the Latin School in Hoorn, where Pieter Anthoniszoon Overtwater was conrector. He published on fortification and on Poland. The minor planet 12618 Cellarius is named in his honor.

There are total of twenty nine of these stunning Andreas Cellarius star maps, and we will be adding more as time allows--be sure to check them all out here:
